So there it is. The truth. The taste of it still shocks you.
"Gods..." you say. "Y-You're gods."
"Asgardians," Loki corrected. "Some might know of us as the Aesir."
"You're GODS."
"Yes."
"YOU. ARE. GODS."
"Stop repeating yourself," Loki sighed. "Yes, we're gods. We cannot die."
"I find that hard to believe," you say shakily.
"Do you?" Loki looked at you, his eyes - those cat-like eyes, a dance of bright green and sky blue - bear down on you as if you're a fugitive. You take a step back.
"Enough," Steve says as he steps in beside you. "Loki, give her a break. Not everyone knows you exist."
Loki scoffs a little, turning back to his dice game.
"You're gods," you say again. You shake your head. Why didn't you make this connection before? "You can perform magic-"
"To some degree," Thor says. "I cannot weave such alchemy like my brother can. He is extremely adept at the art."
You look to Loki. His eyes are downcast, much to your relief. But his pale skin is stretched into a smirk, almost like he's won some hard-fought battle.
"And Sparky can control storms," comes Stark's voice in the room next to you. He walks up behind you, setting a hand on your shoulder. "Amongst his other talents, like steroid-strength."
You look to him. His white shirt has that slight bluish glowing thing underneath it. "And you? What's that?"
Stark looks down at his chest. "Oh, that? Just a souvenir, a little knick-knack I made. Keeps me from dying from metal shrapnel in my heart. Pretty, huh?"
"No, it's not," you say flatly. You back away, shoving his hand aside. "I'm tired of the mind games and the fancy words. Stop dancing around the truth. I want to know who you are and I want to know NOW."
"Sorry kid," Stark says with a grin," but you don't really get a choice."
You fold your arms in front of your chest. "Then forget ever getting my help in a war."
You hear Loki stifle a chuckle. Stark lowers his head so you can see his eyes through his sunglasses. "Oh? And you think that will make a difference?"
"Don't. Lie. To me." you growl. "I'm a mind reader. I know why you want me here, I know why you're helping me. You want to use me, and I'm telling YOU it's not going to happen. Not until I get the truth."
"Then why don't you just take it from our heads, if you're so good at telling us what we're doing?" Natasha asks. She moves to stand beside Loki. You notice the rest of the group around you, listening to the argument. You bite your lip. The woman was right. Damn, she really knew how to put you on the spot.
"Listen, kid," she continued,"the ONLY reason you're not back at home, or in some hospital somewhere, is because of us. We don't have to help you. In fact, the only reason we are is because someone hired us to. Besides that, we have no reason to keep you here. So you should be grateful - we saved your life. The least you could do is watch your mouth."
You can feel your blood boiling. Ooh. Ooh, if you could smack her right now...
"We're the Avengers."
You stare, surprised, at Thor. He looks at you, his face almost saddened. "We are called the Avengers," he explains," we are a team formed by the governments of this planet to protect your world from destruction. Where we come from has never mattered to them or anyone else.
"In truth, my friend, you are the first to wonder such a thing, and you rightly do so. We should have been honest to you, and told you our true intentions. Then, maybe we could avoid such frustration and conflict between each other. So, for your sake, I will explain our origins."
"Thor!" Natasha cried. "You know the regulations. She's-"
"One of us, and she has every right to know," Thor tells her. Natasha closes her lips, her eyes fixed on Thor. The man - the god - looks back to you.
"I am Thor Odinson, the prince and heir to the throne of Asgard and thunder god." He waves his hand to Loki. "My brother is Loki Laufeyson, adopted and the prince of Asgard. He is the heir to the Jotunn throne, and is the god of trickery and magic."
Loki's eyes close, and you see a flash of pain across his face as Thor mentions his last name.
"That is Natasha Romanoff, a trained spy and assassin since she was a child. Clint Barton was also raised an assassin, but he has chosen a different path and weapon as his own." Thor pointed to Stark," Anthony Stark-"
"-Is an amazing man with a brilliant mind and lots of money," Stark interrupts. "I was in a firefight one year, and in an explosion, pieces of shrapnel entered my chest. Thus, this little baby keeps me from dying," he taps the glowing circle on his chest. "It also powers my Iron Man suit, as well as other things."
"Next time you interrupt, Ego, I'm shoving a .45 down your throat," Natasha threatens him. He laughs.
"I was a man that was given a supersoldier serum when I was in the army. They made me into the first super soldier, and I fought Hitler. While trying to take the Tesseract away from enemy hands, my plane crashed into the ocean, and I froze. I lived, somehow, and thanks to Stark, now I'm here," Steve explains.
Banner steps out, his face barely illuminated by the lamp above the table. "And I was attempting to reconstruct the super soldier serum on my own when I was exposed to gamma radiation. The result was...well..." he hesitates..."I became a...as Stark puts it...enormous green rage monster."
You nod. "Well...that...explains everything."
"And you, my friend, are a psychic," Thor tells you. "Your government has been watching you closely, concerned for your safety. They realized your potential when they analyzed your school scores."
You tilt your head. "My scores?"
"You surpassed even the smartest kid in the state," Stark tells you. "Like another Einstein. But when they tested your overall skills to skip a couple grades, you flunked like a bad apple."
You remember that. You remember that test. Ugh.
"They figured you had been cheating," Stark says,"but they realized there was more to it when they placed a teacher in front of you. They noticed that when there was a person present in the room, your answers were similar to theirs. When the teacher was close to you, you aced the test. But when you sat alone, you didn't do so well.
"The same was for accuracy and compter-generated tests. You fell through so many loopholes, you made their process look like swiss cheese."
"So basically, I was reading their minds without even knowing it?" you ask. Stark nodded.
"So...I've had this power all my life, but I've never noticed it," you say.
"You might have a couple times," Banner puts in. "But most likely, you thought it was normal."
He was right. You did.
Stark finishes,"In any case, you'r an anomaly. But nowhere in your gene pool is there any explanation for your abilities. Nobody in your family has these abilities. Nothing in your DNA says 'hey, let's be psychic!' Everything is normal, plain, ordinary." He smiles,"Only, you're not. You're gifted."
"So I'm just a kid with powers that can't be explained."
"Pretty much."
"Wonderful." You sigh, rubbing your temples.
"Don't worry, we'll figure out what it is soon enough," Banner comforts you. "Until then, we're going to help you develop - and control - your powers."
"Yeah, don't want you being like Green Giant over there and just picking up on people's thoughts when you walk down the street!" Stark laughs.
You nod. "Okay. But first, I want to try something."
"What is that?" Thor asks.
"I need someone to get angry. Not you, Banner, please no."
"I was already placing myself out of the equation when you said that," he remarks.
"Thank you for considering our safety," you say, relieved. "I want someone to get really angry. Just one person. And then I want to see if I can tell who it is."
"Give us a moment to decide, and then we will do so,"Thor tells you. You nod, stepping back a couple paces to let them converse. They huddle around each other like football players, and you do your best not to pick up on anything - verbally spoken or thought. After a moment, they turn to you, and wave you over.
"Go on," Stark says, "see who it is."
You concentrate, trying to pick up on anything. Thorns, farm, bones...
"She won't get this."
"I'm gonna be impressed if she's right!"
"If she's right, I'll need to add it to the research..."
"I'm mad, I'm mad, I'm mad, tacos...dammit."

You look to Clint, a smile on your face. You've got him.
"Wrong answer, child."
Your eyes widen. The voice was a whisper in your ear, so teasing that you felt a blush. It seemed almost like it was said out loud...
"Look to the man with no expression. A clever man always hides his anger."
You look to Thor. His face is steeled, almost bored-looking.
"Thor," you blurt out.
Everyone stares at you, even Thor, with wide eyes. Loki looks off, a smile on his face.
"How did you-?" Clint asks, bewildered. "I tried to fool you!"
"I know you did," you tell him. "And I almost fell for it."
"What gave it away?" Thor asks.
"...A hunch," you say.
"Incredible..." Banner says.
No shit, you think.
After the group turns to chatter, you look to Loki. With a pout, you step up to him.
"Why did you help me?" you ask.
"I do not wish to see you fail," he says smoothly. His eyes stay off of you.
"You're telepathic," you tell him. "How?"
"No, child, I am not," he chuckles,"I merely projected my thoughts, and you heard them, loud and clear."
"But you did it-"
"With such skill?" he laughs. "Do not be so astounded. You know of my talents. It should not surprise you."
"It's not every day someone's thoughts sound like that," you accuse. He looks to you, his eyes freezing you, mesmerizing you. God, how did he DO that!? What sorcery makes his eyes so...petrifying?
"I am a sorcerer," he tells you. "Nothing more."
And with that, he sits up, leaving the room. You watch him, still frozen in place. His eyes float around like illusions in the back of your vision, making you shiver. His answer confuses you, though. What did he mean, nothing more? Nothing more than what? What did he think you accused him of?
